It seems like our beloved pets are on their best behavior when we are home and around. Sometimes not even then. But the all too familiar smell of urine stains will arise, and then the hunt begins for where they seem to favor going pee when you are not around.
Finding the stains can prove difficult without the right tools, but Orange County Steam Masters would like to offer some tips and advice on finding the offending odor, and tending to the carpet stain before it sets in.
1. Finding the carpet stain. As mentioned before, without the right tools, cleaning can be a hardship, and you would mostly have to depend on your nose, which could be difficult if there are multiple spots and the stains are faint to the eye. Invest in a UV or florescent black light, preferably in flash light form. They generally don’t cost too much and make finding pet stains a whole lot simpler! The older the stain, the more faint it will become. Search out when the room is completely dark. If that means waiting for the evening hours to come, then do so. You can mark all the spots you find with pieces of painting tape. The adhesive isn’t strong enough to damage your carpet, but strong enough to hold true until you get to attack each spot individually.
2. To first treat the stain, use an enzymatic cleaner. Enzymes better dissolve protein based stains. Rinse the area with cool, distilled water. It is better served working from the outer rims of the stains inward. Spray on your enzyme cleaner and allow it to sit overnight. Place either a paper towel or cloth that has been dampened with cool water. Lie a heavy object on top of the area in question, to layer up the enzyme cleaner to absorb throughout the night.
3. Next, clean and remove the carpet stain. Spray the area with vinegar and then sprinkle a layer of baking soda over the surface. Cover the stain with a towel, and allow to set for 24 hours. Using cold water, wash out the mixture. Only use the water on the cloth, and onto the carpet method, DO NOT over wet the area. Once the stain and odor is lifted, blot dry the spot with a clean cloth and once the remaining moisture has been air dried, vacuum thoroughly.
